"American Jew" was inspired by fellow congregation Rose Shurman at Temple Emanu El.

Rose came to Jeff after he wrote a song to honor another member of the Temple, Esther Mazlow.

Rose said to Jeff "Gee I wish someone would write a song about me." Rose got her wish at an event honering her and her husband Morrie. The song was presented at a special Friday night Service. Five minutes of applause followed the performance. Needless to say the appluse was for Rose and Morrie

Jeff, thought the applause was for him, so he decided to create the CD American Jew, by combining progressive contemporary pop music with Jewish spirituality .

Most songs from "American Jew" explore Jewish lifestyles and lifecycle events like Passing over . "Judah Maccabee/You've Got To Fight For Your Right To The Lord" tells the story of Chanukah in vivid lyrical detail. "Your Wedding Song" has a conversation between Rabbi Rimers of Temple Emanu El and Terri Janning as they discuss the meaning of a Jewish marriage. The 23rd Psalm is a classical piece with a one time only vocal performance recorded at the moment of inception.

The eleven songs are orchestrated with the opening and closing pieces offering a new melodic version of the standard "Shema."
